with a small table, chair and a bucket (for toilet pur-

poses), the only ventilation was from under the door and

this strong light was kept on the whole time I occupied the

closet, there was no water or any washing facility given.

There was insufficient room to lay down, I had to sleep

sitting on the chair, and the closet was too small to even

be able to exercise myself. My food consisted of cold

toast and tea brought to me three times a day by a servant

accompanied by a Guard who unlocked and locked the door,

except that on one occasion I had nothing after the morning

for the remainder of that day, and on another occasion I

had no food for a day and a half. No word was spoken and

these conditions continued until Tuesday, March 3rd, that

is 8 days, during this time I had not removed my clothes,

or washed, and could not move around. I was able to keep

count of the time by winding my watch and writing it down

in my pocket book. The last words that were spoken to me

were "that I was a Spy" and naturally I expected at any

moment to be called out for further examination, or even

worse, and during the whole of this period I had to sit

in complete idleness day after day with this powerful light

on day and night.

During my detention some of Captain Inuzuka's men

and this Miss Shumei visited my Apartment and questioned

my Wife on all my activities, friends etc. and demanded

political documents, saying they would release me if she

would hand them the documents, which of course she was

unable to produce, and they then thoroughly searched my
